Former Korean Police Officer Involved in Phishing Scam in Naga Arrested
Local authorities arrested a former Korean police officer after being accused of allegedly running in a phishing scam activity in Naga City.
Agents from the Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended a former Korean cop after obtaining information that he was leading a fraud ring in the city. Park Junghoon, 49, was apprehended in Naga City by members of the BI fugitive search unit, according to a GMA News report.
Park was arrested, according to BI, on the basis of a deportation warrant issued against him for being an unauthorized and unwanted alien. At least two South Korean courts had issued orders for his arrest for fraud.
The BI went on to say that the arrest was meticulously prepared because the subject is a former police officer and a gang boss. Rendel Sy, the head of the BI FSU, said they had to monitor his activity patterns for over a month to ensure he wouldn’t be able to elude capture.
Park allegedly built up call centers for telecom fraud in the Philippines, Vietnam, and China, according to the BI. From 2012 to 2013, Park allegedly cooperated with other members of a voice phishing crime organization to fool thousands of victims by posing as a loan officer in financial institutions, causing total damages of more than $100 million (P5 billion).
According to the BI, he allegedly duped his victims by promising them they would get a loan if they paid processing fees, and then asking them to pay directly to his account. Park is now held at the Bureau of Immigration’s Warden Facility in Bicutan, Taguig City, awaiting deportation.
