4 PUV Drivers not Wearing Personal Air Purifiers After Implemented in Cebu Arrested

Local authorities apprehended four (4) public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers for not wearing personal air purifiers after it was implemented.

Following the reintroduction of mandated air purifier use in public vehicles in Cebu province, at least four drivers were arrested for failing to comply. The requirement, which was supposed to start on August 16, was postponed by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.

The postponement, she claims, is to give PUV operators more time to procure air-purifiers for their drivers and conductors. 22 PUVs were seized out of 312 that were flagged down during 150 checkpoints on Thursday.

A Temporary Operator’s Permit (TOP)/Traffic Citation Ticket was issued to them (TCT). Four of the 22 violators were detained for not wearing personal air purifiers.

Police Colonel Engelbert Soriano, director of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO), stated the drivers cited various reasons for not wearing air purifiers, emphasizing that they appeared to be making merely excuses. According to him, some of them said that they are having difficulties buying purifiers.

However, according to a top CPPO official, practically every driver and conductor was in compliance with the legislation as of Thursday, or since it was included in the inspection at provincial checkpoints. TCTs were also issued to six taxis for failing to open their windows, five of which were nabbed in Talisay City and one in Naga City.
