The Manila International Airport Authority said that they have received reports about the fire incident at around 1:28 p.m. and by 1:57 p.m., it was already declared fire out.

The rescue and fire fighting division is “still conducting mopping operations and determining real cause of the incident” as per MIAA. MIAA General Manager Eric Ines said that it happened in a vacant area that is now being used as a parking lot and the fire accordingly did not disrupt any airport operations.

Based on the initial but unofficial report, 19 vehicles caught fire.

He shared that the dry grass in the area and being windy outside perhaps contributed for the fire to spread. The Bureau of Fire Protection is also conducting an investigation to this incident.

According to SFO1 Rezmond Geronimo of the Pasay City Fire Station confirmed that it was grass fire.

“Damuhan po ito, maraming duyong dahon o mga damo sa paligid. Lalong-lalo na mainit ang panahon, ito ay nagko-contribute para maging malapit sa grass fire ang ating lugar. Hindi naman ito common na nangyayari. Hindi yata nila na-foresee yung ganitong insidente. Kung titingnan yung area, napaliligiran ito ng damuhan,” Geronimo said.

Amid the country’s dangerous heat index levels, cases like this are possible. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the heat index in some areas may even increase from 42°C to 45°C.

Meanwhile, based on PAGASA April 16 report, the ridge of a high-pressure area will result in hotter weather in several parts of the country.
