Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia Speaks on Policy that Requires Vaccination for Public Transport

Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia is not adapting the “No Vaxx, No Ride” policy of the transportation department saying it’s “anti-poor”.

The rising of the COVID-19 cases in several cities in the Philippines urged the government to re-impose stricter measures in the country. Currently, Metro Manila is under Alert Level 3 which started last January 3, 2022 due to the surge in the cases that followed the holiday season.

Supposedly, the Alert Level 3 implementation expired last January 15 but it was extended until the end of the month. Several other cities outside the capital region that recorded high cases of coronavirus are under the same alert level.

Amid the implementation of the Alert Level 3 in Metro Manila, the local government units (LGUs) agreed to temporarily limit the mobility of the unvaccinated individuals. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is also implementing the “No Vaxx, No Ride” policy.

The implementation of the “No Vaxx, No Ride” policy has started in the capital region and it is under the warning phase now. The strict implementation is expected in the coming weeks as to the transportation department.

On the other side, there are LGUs outside the capital region that are not in favor of the “No Vaxx, No Ride” policy. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia rejected the policy saying it is “anti-poor”.

Garcia reiterated that “vaccination is a matter of choice” and the government must respect the choice of the individuals. Based on the report, instead of implementing the policy in the province, she ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct checkpoints in borders to make sure health protocols are followed in public utility vehicles (PUVs).

Furthermore, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia wants checkpoints done to prevent overloading in PUVs. She also mentioned requiring PUV drivers of air purifiers. She stressed that individuals who chose not to be vaccinated must not be discriminated.
