New road gives 3 remote Gingoog barangays easier access to markets

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Philippines — A recently completed P73-million road has made it easier for farmers in three remote barangays to access markets in Gingoog City.

The 5.2-kilometer concrete road spans across the villages of Kalipay, Sangalan, and Eureka, according to James Alih Abdul, area manager of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) in Northern Mindanao.

Before the road was built, Abdul recalled that bananas produced in these areas fetched only P4 per kilogram. Now the farmers make P16 per kilogram as they were able to easily bring their bananas to the market.

There also used to be more members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in the three villages, but now there are fewer of them now, Abdul added.

Ruel Mantantan, chair of Barangay Kalipay, said travel to the city had become easier, compared to before when it took more than an hour along a perilous road, which made the transport of sick persons difficult.

The project was funded under OPAPP’s Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan program.
