Reader’s Digest UK bids farewell after 86 long years of publication

Eva Mackevic, the editor-in-chief of Readers Digest UK shared that the publication will now be discontinuing operations after 86 years. On Reader’s Digest’s official website, Eva left a short letter to all readers of the magazine.

Dear Readers,

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Reader’s Digest UK coming to a close. This magazine carries a profound legacy, holding special memories for so many—whether it adorned our parents’ coffee tables or served as a gateway to the English language for those abroad. Its closure marks the end of an era that is deeply felt…”

Amidst the burden of knowing the end of a magazine many people have grown very much fond of, the editor-in-chief did not miss to express her gratitude to all the subscribers and their stories, photos, and write-ups that provided a ‘human touch’ in each page of the magazine.

To every subscriber, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support, loyalty, and encouragement throughout the years. Your letters, poems, essays and photographs have filled our pages with life and heart. Each story shared has woven a beautiful tapestry of human experiences, connecting us all in profound ways.

During my eight-year journey with this publication, serving as editor for the past six years has been a true honour and joy. I am grateful for the opportunity to have led such a cherished magazine and to have been a part of your lives through its pages.
While this chapter may close, I am comforted by the belief that the spirit of Reader’s Digest will endure in our memories and within the rich archives spanning nearly a century. As we bid farewell to this beloved publication, I want to express my deepest gratitude for allowing us to be part of your lives and homes.

Sincerely,
Editor-in-chief
Reader’s Digest UK

On LinkedIn, she revealed that the company struggled financially to keep up with the demands of the magazine industry.

“After 86 wonderful years, I am very sad to share that Reader’s Digest UK has come to an end. It has been my privilege and joy to contribute to this iconic publication for nearly eight years, leading its talented team for the last six. Unfortunately, the company just couldn’t withstand the financial pressures of today’s unforgiving magazine publishing landscape and has ceased to trade.” Eva wrote.

In the same post, she addressed their writers who are waiting on their paycheck.

“To any writers awaiting payment for their work, I’ve been assured that the insolvency practitioners are working to communicate with everyone about the next steps. I sincerely hope this process goes smoothly and swiftly for you.

While this chapter closes, I’m excited about what the future holds. I’m eager to explore new opportunities in media and publishing, continuing to tell stories that resonate and inspire. If you have any leads or potential collaborations to discuss, I’d love to hear from you!

Thank you all for your support and camaraderie throughout this journey. Here’s to new beginnings and exciting ventures ahead.”

As the end nears for the beloved publication and new doors of opportunities open for its writers, the company announced that they will be drafting editions of their back catalog for their subscribers to treasure memories with them.
