PH, Australia, Japan, US press China to abide by the 2016 arbitral award

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines, Australia, Japan, and the United States (US) called upon the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to abide by the “final and legally binding” 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Tribunal Award. In a joint statement from the four countries released by the US Embassy on Saturday, it said that National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Richard Marles, Japanese Minister of Defense Kihara Minoru, and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III met for the second time on May 2 (US time) in Hawaii.
