Blazing Philippines: Bracing For Extended Heat Until Mid-May

PHILIPPINES – The Philippines is expected to endure intense heat until mid-May said PAGASA forecaster Glaiza Escullar.

A forecaster announced on Sunday that the Philippines would continue to experience exceptionally high temperatures until mid-May, following a record-breaking heatwave in the capital city of Manila.

Based on a report from Inquirer, the scorching conditions have affected Southeast Asia, leading to the suspension of in-person classes at numerous schools and the issuance of health advisories by authorities. In response to the relentless heat, many sought refuge in air-conditioned shopping malls and swimming pools across the Philippines.

Nancy Bautista, aged 65, said, “This is the hottest I’ve ever experienced here,” noting that her resort in Cavite province was completely booked due to the scorching weather.

“Many of our guests are friends and families. They swim in the pool to fight the heat.”

According to data from the state weather forecaster, Manila experienced an unprecedented temperature peak of 38.8 degrees Celsius (101.8 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, accompanied by a heat index soaring to 45°C.

According to the report, the heat index, which factors in humidity, determines how hot the temperature actually feels. March, April, and May traditionally mark the hottest and driest period of the year, but this year’s conditions have been intensified by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

“All places in the country, not necessarily just Metro Manila, are expected to have hotter temperatures until the second week of May,” Glaiza Escullar of the state weather forecaster told AFP.

“There is a possibility that the areas will exceed those temperatures being measured today until the second week of May.”
