DENR to probe vlogger holding tarsier improperly in a viral video.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has this statement about the vlogger holding tarsier in a viral video.

Various social media sites have become many people’s platform to share their life, experiences, learning, and odd encounter. However, it looks like some uploaders are not that careful not in what they share but on what they do and share on social media.

Recently, in the now-deleted video that went viral on social media on Wednesday, April 10, vlogger named Ryan Parreño uploaded a video of him disturbing two tarsiers. The creatures were silent and just staying still in their natural habitat when this vlogger grasp them inside his hands.

The vlogger is a resident of Polomolok, South Cotabato, who goes by the handle Farm Boy. He picked up the animals and was even telling them to smile for the camera. The incident happened in Polomolok which created a loud buzz online.

Many netizens expressed their anger and disappointment after seeing the animals looking like they were gripped tightly by the vlogger. According to environmental lawyer Esther Gertrude Biliran, what was done can be counted as maltreatment. It is a common knowledge that tarsiers are nocturnal and they must not be touched or disturbed in their sleep.

In a tarsier sanctuary in Bohol, it is prohibited to make noises and use flash when taking a photo during a visit.

The viral video reached the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Soccsksargen and recently issued a statement. According to the statement, they will be investigating the said incident of “improper treatment” of tarsiers by a vlogger.

They found out that the two tarsiers were already released but the “agency is still looking for further actions to be taken on the wildlife incident”.
