HOLY WEEK RULES – Pinoys have a lot of beliefs and during the Lenten season, these are the ones we used to follow when we were still young.

A time for penance and reflection is the Holy Week and during this time, there are some things many Pinoys avoid doing. For example, Catholic people’s obligatory days for fasting and abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Moreover, the Fridays of Lent are also obligatory days for abstinence.

Check out below some of these nostalgic rules during this season we used to believe and follow when we were still kids:

  1. No loud noises.

Elders taught us that during this season, we must keep quiet including keeping away from loud devices like radio or television. Some were even told that talking and singing were not allowed. What people should do is pray and reflect.

  1. No meat!

Not eating meat during the times of Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays of Lent is a sign of honoring Jesus Christ who sacrificed his flesh on a Friday. Many Filipinos practice this and they only eat fish or veggies.

  1. No having fun.

In Filipino households, this meant not leaving the house which means no outings, no out-of-town trips, and other forms of having fun. Playing and even laughing loudly is not allowed. What people should do is visit a church, pray the rosary, Visita Iglesia, and Stations of the Cross.

  1. You should not get wounded.

Elders made children believe that if they get a wound during this time, it won’t heal because God is dead and He won’t be able to do the healing.

  1. You cannot shower.

If you can still remember, this is because it is believed that the water will turn into blood at 3 PM or the time of Jesus’ death. If you are to shower, it must be before 3 PM.

How about you? What did you do as a kid during this time? Meanwhile, here are some Holy Week prayers – a guide in praying this Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Black Saturday.
