An 87-year-old grandma from Silay City, Negros Occidental is selling salt despite her age to support her 200 grandchildren.

The extraordinary grandmother Florentina Padios, known as “Lola Akay” is known for selling salt at the market and for her skills as a traditional healer and herbalist. Her motivation behind this humble business venture is to provide for her extensive family of 200 grandchildren.

Lola Akay is a resident of Hda. San Vicente, Barangay Kapitan Ramon, Silay City. Beyond her role as a salt vendor, Lola Akay is recognized for her healing touch, offering traditional massages and herbal remedies to those in need.

Over the years, she has earned a reputation for relieving the pain of many individuals through her healing practices.

The grandma works hard selling salt to make ends meet, driven by a great sense of responsibility and love for her family. The earnings from her salt sales are used to buy essentials such as rice, food, and support for her grandchildren, who are facing financial difficulties.

The hardworking senior citizen’s life shows her unconditional love for her grandchildren. Despite her age, she continues to strive to sell salt, even when faced with challenges such as slow business.

Unfazed, she purchased a sack of salt for P600 and sold each pouch for P10, and each container for P25. Every sale, no matter how small, contributes to sustaining her family and ensuring they have enough in times of need.

Lola Akay expresses her determination, saying, “Samtang mapagros pa ako, padayunon ko ang akon pagbaligya sang asin kay pigado ang amon kahimtangan sa uma.”
