DFA Says Hit-and-Run on Filipino Cyclists in Kuwait is Not Hate Crime

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) claimed that the hit-and-run incident on Filipino cyclists in Kuwait is not a hate crime.

According to Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, the event in Kuwait in which an SUV slammed into a group of Filipino bikers was not a hate crime. According to De Vega, there is a long-standing tradition in Kuwait that drivers dislike bikers.

“So far, walang indication na hate crime ito kasi mayroong tradition ang Kuwait na ang mga drivers ayaw talaga sa cyclists kaya ang iniisip nila, this will lead to more calls sa cyclists na kailangan bigyan ng better protection ang cyclists, malinaw na bike lanes,” said De Vega in a public briefing, based on the report of Manila Bulletin.

It should be noted that 15 Filipino bikers were injured in Kuwait after being hit by an SUV. According to the DFA, the bikers were hit by a car on the Arabian Gulf Road. The bikers are made up of 30 Filipinos, according to DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega.

An automobile collided with a group of Filipino bikers on Friday morning, hurting at least 15 men, according to a local radio station. Despite being in the bike lane, they were hit by a car.

The bikers were riding along the important road without a permit, according to the Kuwait News Agency. The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait, according to the DFA, has already checked on the victims and contacted their families in order to provide the necessary support.
