DILG Urges PNP Officials Allegedly Involved in Illegal Drug Trade to Resign

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged some officials from the Philippine National Police (PNP) to resign over involvement in the illegal drug trade.

DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos, Jr. has requested that all colonels up to and including generals submit a courtesy resignation. He has called PNP generals and colonels to retire over their suspected involvement in the sale of illegal drugs in the country.

“Ako ay nananawagan sa lahat ng full colonel hanggang sa general, ako ay umaapela na mag-submit ng courtesy resignation,” Abalos said in a press conference held this Wednesday.

According to Abalos, this is part of the government’s effort to remove PNP officials implicated in illegal drugs from their ranks. However, Abalos did not provide the identities of the PNP officers.

Based on the article of Inquirer, their resignation, he claims, will help restore public trust in the government’s anti-drug operation. He stated that the newly constituted fact-finding committee will conduct a probe into the PNP’s role in the illegal drug trade.

“This is a very radical move, but we have to do this,” Abalos emphasized.

Abalos also stated that this is not a mandatory command, but that he is “appealing” to the colonels and generals to make the change. This is not the first time that generals have been implicated in a drug cartel.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte named various names of PNP generals who are allegedly involved in the drug trade during his presidency. The PNP chief, Lt. Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr., has not responded to Abalos’ statement.
