Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Passes Away At 95, Vatican Confirms

POPE EMERITUS BENEDICT XVI – Retired pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has died at his home in the Vatican at 95.

Pope Benedict passed away this Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the age of 95 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery of the Vatican. According to the Vatican’s announcement, the ex-pope passed away at 9:34 a.m. (4:34 p.m. in the Philippines).

“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible,” the Vatican announced about the passing of Pope Benedict.

Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger is the real name of Pope Benedict. He was born on April 16, 1927, in Bavaria, Germany, and was elected as the 265th Pope at the age of 78 on April 19, 2005.

Old age is one of the reasons for the death of Pope Benedict who renounced his duties as head of the Catholic Church on February 28, 2013 due to his health.

On December 28, 2022 in the last General Audience of Pope Francis, he asked for prayers for the deteriorating condition of his predecessor the Holy Pope.

In the church’s six-hundred-year history, Pope Benedict is the first modern pope to step down. The retired pope’s body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica beginning on Jan. 2, 2023, the remains of the deceased disciple of the church.
