Pope Benedict XVI Died, Pope Emeritus Passed Away At 95

Vatican announces the death of Pope Benedict XVI, the Pope Emeritus.

POPE BENEFICT XVI – Farewell to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI who just died at the age of 95 due to health complications.

The Holy See Press Office announced on Saturday, December 31, that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has returned to the Father’s House. He died at 9:34 AM in his residence at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery.

He was 95 years old.

The statement says:

“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 AM in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible. As of Monday morning, 2 January 2023, the body of the Pope Emeritus will be in Saint Peter’s Basilica so the faithful can bid farewell.”

For the past several days, news of the worsening health condition of Pope Emeritus emerged online which gained concern from many people around the world. The worsening of his health condition is because of getting old.

Pope Francis shared the news previously that his predecessor’s health condition is worsening. He invited the people to pray for Pope Emeritus, who he said was “very ill”.

To recall, in 2020, Benedict’s official biographer, Peter Seewald, told Passauer Neue Presse newspaper that in his testament, he wants to be buried in the same crypt where his Polish predecessor John Paul II was originally laid to rest.

A written testament will be issued following his passing.

Benedict resigned in 2013 and chose Petrine ministry to be his residence. He died almost a decade after stepping down as the head of the Catholic Church.
