Obiena graces Patafa weekly event; new Youth discus mark set

A Philippine record in the discus throw for the Youth Category (using a 1.5kg implement) was set during Week 6 of the PATAFA Weekly Relay Series with world class pole vaulter EJ Obiena in attendance at the Philsports Track Oval.

Denver Tacay of the University of Baguio threw the iron disc to a distance of 49.69 meters, besting his competitor by a little more than 17 meters in the event sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission and CEL Logistics, Inc.

He made the feat on his third try to the cheers of fellow athletes competing in the weekly event.

“Ito na po ang personal best ko. Ang target ko po is ma-achieve ang 55 meters within one year,” Tacay said.

Another promising performance for the day was recorded by a sixteen-year-old stunner in the 5000 meter event.

Kira Elis of the Get Coach’d team literally ran rings around her opposition, lapping them twice with a time of 19:05.92 and surpassing last week’s 20:01.5 by collegiate athletes.

“I’m really very happy about my performance today, especially since I achieved a personal best after just coming off a race last Friday,” the high school junior said.

Obiena was at the venue to lend support to the Weekly Series where his rise to international stardom started in 2014.

“I’d like to congratulate all participants in this event. Dito din po ako nagsimula. With hard work and determination, I believe that you all can do it,” Obiena said.

The Weekly Relay Series is made possible thru the cooperation and sponsorship of the Philippine Sports Commission, CEL Logistics, Milo, Cignal TV, Wireless Link Technologies, Casio G-Shock, Cellife Cellular Nutrition, Masiv Sports, Dr. J Alcohol, Pencer Q, Chooks-To-Go, Puma and Silver Bullet Productions.
