Pagasa: TD Caloy exits PAR, continues to enhance ‘habagat’ in parts of Luzon, Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — A rainy Thursday is expected in parts of Luzon and the Visayas as Tropical Depression Caloy continues to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat” even after exiting the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said.

In its early morning weather update, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Caloy” was last spotted some 565 kilometers west of Central Luzon.

It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph), a gustiness of up to 70 kph and is moving west southwest at 40 kph, according to Pagasa.

Pagasa is also monitoring a low pressure area (LPA), which is expected to develop into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours. It is located 1,020 km east of Northern Luzon.

The LPA will be named “Domeng” if it develops into a tropical depression—the country’s fourth one in 2022, Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja said.

According to Pagasa, monsoon rains are expected in Bataan, Zambales, Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Aurora and Quezon.

It warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to scattered to widespread moderate to at times heavy rains.

For the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected.

Meanwhile, the enhanced southwest monsoon will bring cloudy skies to the central and eastern portions of Visayas as well as the Zamboanga peninsula and Sulu in Mindanao.

Localized thunderstorms are likewise expected in the rest of Visayas and Mindanao from noon until the evening.
