Commuter Air Dismay to Hardly Practiced Social Distancing Inside Public Bus

A concerned commuter exposes the hardly practiced social distancing inside a public bus where passengers are seen standing.

After riding a public utility bus, a commuter named Portia Chua Martin aired her dissatisfaction on Facebook. Despite the government’s mandate to limit passenger capacity to 50%, passengers were allegedly seen standing during her ride.

Martin claims that other passengers on a bus from Cavite to Lawton in Manila she reportedly boarded did not maintain social distancing. Despite the fact that all passengers were wearing masks and face shields, Marin believed it was still dangerous for them to stand near to one another inside a vehicle.

“Natakot ako tapos nadismaya ako kasi nga ang taas ng pasahe tapos siksikan pa kami so anong purpose ng pagtaas ng pasahe,” said Martin.

She revealed that the minimum fare, which was P35 before the outbreak, has now been hiked to P60. Other bus passengers, like Marin, are concerned about their health when riding buses that are overcrowded.

A commuter stated that he would prefer ride another bus to a different route than stay inside the crowded bus. Another commuter stated that she would prioritize her health, particularly in the event of a health emergency.

The one-seat-apart rule in between passengers, with no standing passengers, must be followed, according to Department of Transportation (DOTr) rules. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation indicated that it will recommend to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases a 100 percent passenger capacity in public utility vehicles in Metro Manila (IATF).
