Labor Group Says Government Should Help Small Businesses to Provide 13th Month Pay of Workers

The labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno is urging the government to fund small business for the 13

^th

month pay of the Filipino workers.

On Thursday (October 14, 2021), KMU chairperson Elmer Labog said that the Philippine government should help small to medium enterprises. He said that businesses are struggling to fulfill their obligations to their employees.

Labog reiterated that the government should make a way to help the entrepreneurs give the 13

^th

month pay of their workers amid the coronavirus pandemic. He said that Filipino laborers are struggling with their finances due to the health crisis.

“Hindi puwedeng excluded sa pagbabayad ang mga employers sa 13th month pay sa kabila ng epekto ng pandemya dahil sa ngayon pa lang matinding kagutuman at kakulangan na ang nadarama ng mga manggagawa,”

Labog said.

The group leader explained that the worker’s 13

month pay is not a bonus and it is already meant for other expenses during the Christmas season. He also said that the government should provide an allotment instead of loan to the companies that suffered from bankruptcy.

Employers Confederation of the Philippines said that the small enterprises would struggle to find fund to give the 13

^th

month pay of their employees. The agency expressed the willingness of employers to cooperate but the government should help them to fulfill their obligations.

The business community is also urging the government to ease and loosen up the restrictions when it comes to business amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Labor and Employment reminded the employers that

13

^th

month pay

is mandatory except only when employees agreed not to receive it.
