Phivolcs: No tsunami threat to PH from magnitude 6.5 quake off Kermadec Islands

MANILA, Philippines — The magnitude 6.5 earthquake in the Kermadec Islands Region willnot cause a tsunami threat to the country, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Tuesday.

Kermadec Islands is a volcanic island group in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of Auckland, New Zealand.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data… there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” the Phivolcs evaluation said.

A magnitude 6.5 quake struck the Kermadec Islands Region on Tuesday, 10:53 a.m. It had a 40-kilometer depth, Phivolcs said.
