MANILA, Philippines — Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas on Monday appealed for more COVID-19 vaccines to stop the surge in COVID-19 cases in his jurisdiction.

In a televised briefing, Treñas said the government should also  give more vaccines to Region 6 or Western Visayas the way it did with the so-called NCR Plus 8 covering Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, Bulacan, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Pampanga, and Rizal.

“The only way we can really stop the surge is for the national government to add more vaccines in the same way that you lowered the cases in the NCR Plus 8 by flooding the LGUs in NCR Plus 8 with vaccines,” Treñas said.

“Sometimes, I would like to say that we are from Region 6, we are from Iloilo, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Negros, we are also Filipinos. The only way we can really stop the surge is if we flood also LGUs outside Metro Manila or NCR Plus 8 with vaccines. That’s the only way. You did it in NCR Plus 8, perhaps you should also do it here,” he went on.

In Iloilo City, Treñas said they have only so far vaccinated about 40,000 persons.

Apart from vaccines, Treñas also asked the national government for more medical personnel and equipment.

Iloilo City is among the areas under modified enhanced community quarantine until the end of June.
