DOH Speaks on Trend of COVID-19 Cases in PH

DOH – The Department of Health said that the increase in the COVID-19 cases in the Philippines will continue in the next days and even weeks.

The world is currently faced with a tougher battle as the COVID-19 virus continues to mutate. In fact, there are variants that alarmed the health authorities including the Lambda and the Delta variants. The former was reportedly recorded first in Peru while the latter was logged first in India.

The Delta variant was identified as a factor in the spike in coronavirus cases in India which further led to the collapse of its healthcare system. It hooked attention with its higher transmissibility rate compared with other variants of COVID-19.

The

Philippines

is one of the countries that recorded cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19. It is amid the country implementing strict travel restrictions on travelers from the nations that logged cases of the variant of concern.

Initially, the cases recorded in the Philippines were of returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs) until the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed local transmissions of the disease. Recently, the health department also spotted signs of community transmission.

Metro Manila was previously placed under the strictest level of community quarantine measure, the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), for two weeks. Starting August 21, the measure was downgraded to Modified ECQ but there are still a lot of restrictions.

Based on a report on

ABS-CBN News

, DOH said that the effects of the ECQ will be seen within two (2) to three (3) weeks. According to health undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, the total COVID-19 cases in the country will keep on increasing in the next days.

DOH said that the “active case finding” of the local government units is a factor in the increasing trend of the COVID-19 cases in the country which will most likely continue in the next days or even weeks. Vergeire added that LGUs must boost contact tracing and isolation to stop community transmission. She also noted that all symptomatic close contacts of the patients must be tested.
