Monks Left Temple in Thailand After They Test Positive for Use of Illegal Drug

A Buddhist temple in Thailand loses monks after most of them became positive in drug tests during a drug raid.

There are no monks left at the Buddhist temple in Thailand after the authorities carried out a narcotics raid after every one of them tested positive for drugs. At a temple in the northern province of Phetchabun, four monks and their abbot tested positive for methamphetamine, a local official said, based on the report.

The monks were told to go to the medical facility for drug recovery. They were discovered to have used methamphetamine, a “strong, extremely addictive stimulant” with substantial “central nervous system” effects.

Thailand is aggressive today to suppress the worsening case of drug trafficking, which is regarded as “one of the most hazardous substances on the American market.” Methamphetamine is a serious problem in Thailand and reached an all-time high in 2021, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Thailand is inundated with methamphetamine that comes from Myanmar, the largest producer of the said illicit drug. Local officials did not go into detail about why they raided the temple.

The anti-drug campaign was commissioned by Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha last month. This occurs after the incident involving the fired police officer who killed 37 people during a shooting at a nursery and was later found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

A local authority has since confirmed that the temple is now devoid of monks, and the adjacent people are worried they will be unable to perform any merit-making. An essential Buddhist practice is merit-making, in which believers acquire “protective force” by performing good activities like feeding monks.
