DSWD Will Probe “Smelly” Canned Tuna Included in Some Food Packs

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to probe alleged “smelly” canned tuna included in some food packs.

Former Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque calls for an investigation into how the smelly and bad-tasting canned food contained in the food packs given in disaster-affected areas arrived into the DSWD. This was announced when the canned food, which was believed to taste awful, was removed from the meal packets given in Batanes.

According to Roque, it should be known who the supplier is and who collaborated to sell the government low-quality canned foods. He stated that because the canned products were purchased by the government, the provider must supply acceptable quality.

“Pero dapat siguro magkaroon ng imbestigasyon bakit nakalusot yung ganyang sardinas sa mga binibili ng gobyerno? Dapat malaman natin sino yung supplier yan, sino na naman ang nagsabwatan para bentahan ng hindi mabuting sardinas ang ating gobyerno,” said Roque.

He claims that instead of being joyful and thankful, typhoon victims will be dissatisfied since the meal packets distributed have the odor and flavor of canned food. Following concerns that the canned tunas included in its meal packs were outdated, the DSWD recently authorized a recall, based on the report.

The DSWD stated that locals complained about the canned fish included in its Family Food Packs (FFP) under the brand name “Ocean’s Best Tuna.” Residents in Oriental Mindoro who were handed food packs as government relief after being affected by the oil disaster claimed that the canned tuna they were given smelled bad and tasted salty.
