Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes off Batanes

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake was recorded off Batanes late Thursday evening, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The temblor was detected at 9:48 p.m., with its epicenter traced some 50 kilometers northeast of the town of Itbayat.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 10 kilometers, Phivolcs said in the first earthquake bulletin.

No intensities have so far been reported.

State seismologists, however, warned of possible damage and aftershocks.
