Exorcist Priest in Batangas Arrested for Allegedly Offending Religious Feelings

Police authorities arrested an exorcist priest for allegedly offending religious feelings after chastising the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Batangas.

The Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) apprehended a priest at St. Mary Magdalene House on Caleruega Road in Nasugbu, Batangas. It was determined to be Fr. Winston Fernandez Cabading, 57, is a parish priest of the Archdiocese of Manila’s Exorcism Office.

The priest was arrested for violating Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code (Offending Religious Feelings), according to the newspaper. The priest was charged after former Commission on Elections chairman Harriet Demetriou filed a complaint against him with the Quezon City Prosecutors Office, accusing him of insulting the Blessed Virgin Mary’s apparition, based on the report.

Demetriou, a former Sandiganbayan Justice, is a devotee of Our Lady Mary Mediatrix of All Grace and has accused Cabading of being Mary’s “rabid critic.” He was arrested on May 8, 2023, under the authority of a warrant of arrest issued by Presiding Judge Madonna Concordia Echiverri of Quezon City Regional Trial Court, Branch 81, with P18,000 recommended bail for his temporary freedom.

Cabading was accused of breaching Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison. Demetriou, a former judge, stated in her complaint that the “Mediatrix of All Grace is a Marian apparition that occurred sometime in 1948 in the Carmelite Monastery of Lipa, Batangas.”

She slammed Cabading’s allegations that a 1951 Lipa Diocesan Verdict “negated the authenticity of the 1948 apparition of Our Lady, Mary, Mediatrix of All Grace.” The priest was transferred to the CIDG Southern DFU office for documentation and disposition.
