CEBU CITY — Taiwan’s flag carrier, China Airlines, on Thursday, December 1, launched its first direct flight between Cebu and Taiwan.

According to airport and airline officials, there is a growing demand for leisure travel between Cebu and Taiwan amid tourism recovery efforts. The new route will also allow easier access for overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan.

“We are very happy and proud to have the national flag carrier to fly to Cebu,” said Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) General Manager Julius Neri.

“We are now in the recovery stage and we are still facing challenges in passenger traffic especially international destinations and we have not yet recovered the number of flights in the pre-pandemic but we are on the way there, thank you to China Airlines.”

China Airlines will have four flights every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday via an Airbus A321Neo aircraft.

The flight from Taipei, Taiwan arrived in Cebu around 11 a.m. with 120 passengers. The same aircraft also departed the Cebu airport around 11:35 a.m. with over a hundred passengers to Taipei.

A departure ceremony was given to passengers with a 25-dollar base fare promo. A water cannon salute also welcomed the Airbus A321Neo when it landed at the MCIA.

At present, the MCIA has 13 foreign and four Philippine-based airlines partners connecting to 27 domestic destinations and 10 international destinations.

Neri also announced that some existing airlines are adding more flights from Philippine Airlines who are now flying to Bangkok and Baguio City.

Korean Air, he said, will now have daily flights to Korea instead of three times a week.

“All of these things will help us increase our number of arrivals and departures,” Neri added.
