WHO INVENTED TABLE TENNIS – The game of table tennis has its roots in lawn tennis and this is the person who invented this sport.

In the early days of the 20th century, table tennis, called Ping-Pong originally, was invented in England. The term table tennis was only adopted around 1921–1922. The Pingpong Association was revived in 1902 but was broken in 1905.

Despite the happening, the game still continued in parts of England and outside London. And by time around the 1920s, it is being played in different countries. International Table Tennis Federation was formed or the Fédération Internationale de Tennis de Table.

The founding members are England, Sweden, Hungary, India, Denmark, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Wales. In the 1990s, several countries joined and the number reached more than 165 members.

What are the origins of this sport? David Foster was the one who conceptualized this game in 1890 and was inspired by lawn tennis. During this time, lawn tennis was very popular but oftentimes, cold weather tends to get in the way. And because of this, Foster, a merchant and politician, got the idea to make a parlor version of this.

The very first version is very different from today’s game. Initially, the rackets have strings. the ball was made of rubber, the net was a solid wall, and the table was fenced.

In 1926, the World Table Tennis Championships began.

In present times, when one says table tennis, what immediately pops out in their minds would be Chinese or China. The Chinese hold more than 85% of the total gold Olympic medals. They officially started participating in competitions in 1961.
