Kabataan Rep. SK Election Wants to be Done in December

Kabataan party-list Representative Raoul Manuel pushes for the barangay elections to be done in Dec. 5, 2022.

The Representative want to push through the election, because there is a need to elect some 30, 000 Sangguniang Kabataan posts in the country.

According to the law maker the cause of the vacancies in the positions of the Sanggunian Kabataan is the pandemic, because some officials need to resign in their post to find a job.

Manuel and ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro, cast their two dissenting votes after the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms on Tuesday voted to postpone the elections.

According to ABS-CBN News, the postponement is due to the 38 house bills seeking the Barangay election to be postponed and reschedule it next year.

“Sa Sangguniang Kabataan, ayon sa latest data nating nakuha, nasa 34,000 na na posisyon sa SK ang bakante dahil na rin sa naging krisis ng mamamayan nung panahon ng pandemya, na kahit yung SK officials natin ay ‘di din naman nakakawala,”Manuel said in a press conference by Makabayan Bloc.

The law maker believed that the Commission on Election is ready and well prepared for the barangay poll in December.

He also point out that the postponement of the barangay election is violating the rights of the people to choose their officials.

In a report, He also cited the statement of the Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia, that the government may spend as much as P10 billion depending of the date when be the election will be conducted.

Instead of saving funds the postponement of the election will add additional expenses, because it will require reopening of registration which is expensive.
