Former DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo & His Career in Politics

JESSE ROBREDO – Here are some details about the personal background, family, and political career of the late former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary.

Personal Background:

Born on May 27, 1958 in Naga, Jesse Manalastas Robredo is the son of Jose Chan Robredo Sr. and Marcelina Manalastas-Robredo. He has Chinese descent from his paternal side. He has a brother and three (3) sisters.

With regards to his educational background, Jesse had his elementary education at the Naga Parochial School. He spent his high school at the Ateneo de Naga University and enrolled at De La Salle University for college. He took Industrial Management Engineering and Mechanical Engineering degrees. He also studied at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government as an Edward Mason Fellow and took his Masters in Public Administration. He also has his Masters in Business Administration at the University of the Philippines Diliman as scholar.

In 1987, Jesse Robredo married Leni Robredo. He was her boss then as he was the director of the Bicol River Basin Development Program (BRBDP). Their marriage is blessed with three (3) daughters – Jessica Marie “Aika”, Patricia Janine (Tricia), and Jillian Therese.

Political Career

At 29 years old in 1988, Jesse Robredo was elected mayor of Naga. He was a former League of the Cities Philippines president and Metro Naga Development Council chairman. He finished all three (3) terms as mayor in Naga and Asiaweek Magazine recognized him as the chief executive who made Naga one of the “most improved” cities in Asia.

In 2010, he was appointed to lead the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). However, on August 18, 2012, he died in a plane crash.

Death

The then-DILG Secretary was supposedly off to his hometown and trying to catch up with the swimming event of one of his daughters when the Piper PA-34 Seneca light he was aboard crashed off the coast of Masbate Island. Engine failure was identified as the cause of the incident.
