Manila honors Tokyo Games veteran Obiena

Tokyo Games veteran EJ Obiena has once again challenged the youth, especially from the premier city of Manila, to go after their dreams, saying anything is possible.

He threw the challenge to Manila youth after being honored as one of the outstanding Manilans on Thursday – a day before city marks its 451st founding anniversary.  

Obiena, who is currently based in Formia, Italy where he is training, was represented by his parents during the elaborate awarding ceremony.

“This award is dedicated to my fellow youths of Tondo I and II, where I came from. I hope I can inspire you all to dream, and go after your dream. Anything is possible through hard work and grit,” Obiena said.

“My roots in Manila started in Calle Azcarraga (now CM Recto Avenue) and is more than 70 years deep and I am more than happy to be recognized as one of its outstanding citizens.”

Obiena was recognized for his achievements in pole vault, where he is currently the national and Asian record holder. He is is currently ranked No. 6 in the world.

Obiena thanked local officials for the recognition.

“Thank you Mayor Isko Moreno, Mayor-Elect Dra. Honey Lacuna, Vice Mayor-Elect Yul Servo, Mr. Roel de Guzman of the Manila Sports Council, and to the entire officers and staff of the City of Manila. It is truly an honor. And most especially to my parents who represented me in this ceremony, I share this honor and utmost gratitude to you.”
