2 teenagers face raps for drawing, firing gun amid election season ban

MANILA, Philippines — An 18-year-old male and his 19-year-old companion are facing complaints for violating gun ban policies amid the election season, after a barangay officer caught them pulling out and firing a pistol in Taguig City.

Reports from the Southern Police District (SPD) on Thursday showed that a member of the Barangay Security Force (BSF) of Barangay Ibayo-Tipas in Taguig saw the suspect, identified as Jimuel Lopez, draw an unknown caliber which he fired on Thursday morning.

The BSF member immediately called for assistance of other BSF personnel from Barangay Ligid-Tipas, and they were able to subdue Lopez and Wilmore Estrada.

A 9mm pistol and a magazine with three live bullets were recovered from Lopez, while a 12-inch kitchen knife was confiscated from Estrada. Aside from the said weapons, an empty shell from the pistol was also seen at the crime scene.

Aside from violating the Omnibus Election Code provision on gun ban and weapons, Lopez would also face complaints for alarm and scandal, provisions of Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, while Estrada will be charged for allegedly violating Batas Pambansa Blg. 6 which bans carrying bladed weapons outside one’s residence.
