50 People Contract Diarrhea in Southern Leyte

DIARRHEA – About 50 people have contracted diarrhea at various towns in Southern Leyte affected by Typhoon Odette.

Last year, Typhoon Odette severely affected numerous provinces in the country. It destroys numerous buildings, establishments and houses. It also uprooted trees, killed animals and took the lives of innocent residents.

The devastating typhoon washed out homes leaving the poor victims with a little or even nothing to start with. Some of them currently resides at evacuation center. Odette has also struck the province of Leyte leaving numerous towns without water and electricity.

12 Southern Leyte towns including Anahawan, Bontoc, Hinundayan, Libagon, Liloan, Macrohon, Malitbog, Padre Burgos, Saint Bernard, San Ricardo, Sogod and Tomas Oppus with no water sources.

The regional health department found conducted a study and found 50 people with acute diarrhea.  The water sources in the areas have been found positive for E.Coli or Escherichia Coli.

The study shows that 69 water samples from 16 LGUs in the province came from hand pumps, reservoirs and household connections.

Maasin City has the most cases of diarrhea for having 12. The acute watery diarrhea cases were seen at rural health units, according to DOH Eastern Visayas surveillance unit and health emergency management section and regional epidemiological head Dr. Marc Steven Capongcol.

The city government reported that no patient has been admitted to the hospital and no fatality has been recorded. Regional sanitary engineer Percival de Paz is suspecting that soil intrusion and erosion might cause the water contamination.

Percival de Paz explained that the pathogens might infect the water through damaged pipelines.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health advised the residents in the affected areas to boil the water before drinking.
