COVID-19 cases in City of Manila are decreasing, says OCTA

MANILA, Philippines — COVID-19 cases in the City of Manila are decreasing, independent analytics group OCTA Research said Tuesday.
According to OCTA Research, Manila recorded 1,210 new COVID-19 cases on January 17 based on the report of the Department of Health (DOH). The group said this is the lowest in the city since January 4.

“The 7-day average of new cases decreased from 1,958 to 1,829 or a 7% decrease. The reproduction number in Manila decreased to 1.73, or less than 2 infections per infected individual, from 4.30 just a week prior,” OCTA Research fellow Guido David said over Twitter.
“If new cases continue to decrease in Manila, there is a strong possibility that new cases in the NCR will decrease as well. Nevertheless, NCR residents must continue to remain vigilant in following public health guidelines to sustain this downward momentum,” he added.
The City of Manila has 3,413 active cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, based on data from the Manila Public Information Office.

On Monday, David also said that the spread of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila appeared to be slowing down, considering the decreased daily growth rate of coronavirus cases in the region.
However, DOH Undersecretary and spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire said it is too early to say that COVID-19 cases are declining, noting that the number of new cases being reported per day is still high.
