China To Extend More Help to Odette-Hit PH

CHINA – The Chinese government will send around P800 million more financial assistance to help the Philippines recover from Typhoon Odette.

One of the biggest challenges faced by the Philippines in 2021 was the wrath of Typhoon Odette. Internationally called Typhoon Rai, it was the strongest storm to have hit the country last year. Even the initial forecasts already prompted massive preparations because of the strength of the typhoon.

Many families in flood-prone areas in the Philippines were evacuated prior to Odette’s entry to the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). The rescuers stayed on alert as the typhoon was entering the country.

Odette brought heavy rains and strong winds to the Philippines. Several cities in the country were left submerged in deep floodwater by the typhoon.

Following the wrath of Typhoon Odette, many families lost their houses. Their homes were either washed away by the flood, damaged by the strong winds or hit by falling trees.

A lot of families are staying in temporary shelters and evacuation centers after Odette. There are also a lot of people who lost their source of living to the typhoon.

Public and private agencies in the Philippines acted to help the survivors of the calamity. There are also foreign governments that pledged and sent their help to the country.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, China vowed to send an additional of around P800 million cash assistance to the Philippines to help the country recover from Odette. It was announced by Chinese state councilor and foreign minister Wang Yi during the 5th Manila Forum for Philippines-China Relations.

Yi stressed that Beijing wants “cooperation and friendship” with Manila and not “colonization or war”. China is also committed to helping PH meet the vaccination needs in the fight against the pandemic.
