Update on PGH Health Workers Contracting COVID-19 in the Line of Duty

PGH HEALTH WORKERS – Not less than 1,100 health workers of the Philippine General Hospital have tested positive for COVID-19 since January 2022.

The rise in the COVID-19 cases in the Philippines is trying to be contained through stricter measures now. The whole Metro Manila is currently under Alert Level 3 until January 15, 2022 following the increase in the cases that succeeded the holiday season.

The authorities have already anticipated that COVID-19 cases may climb again in the first quarter of the year due to the holiday activities of many people. However, the rise in the cases came amid the possible spread of the current global variant of concern, the Omicron variant.

First recorded in South Africa, the Omicron variant was reported to be a “heavily mutated” version of the virus. The Philippines is one of the countries that logged cases of the said variant of concern.

One of the huge concerns of the government and the health department now is the workforce in hospitals. Many healthcare workers are contracting COVID-19 in the line of their duties.

Based on a recent report on ABS-CBN News, since January 1, 2022, at least 1,100 Philippine General Hospital (PGH) health workers got infected with COVID-19. According to PGH spokesperson Jonas del Rosario, currently, the hospital has 314 COVID-19 patients.

The current count of the COVID patients in PGH exceeds the bed capacity of the hospital which is set to accommodate only 300 coronavirus patients for admission. Del Rosario stressed that what happens is they convert their non-COVID beds so they can have more beds for the coronavirus patients.

This week, at least 100 PGH health workers tested positive for COVID-19 affecting their manpower and their response to the situation. Currently, infected healthcare workers are required to isolate for at least ten (10) days.
