Here are the different functions of communication and some examples.

FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION – These are the different functions of communication and a given example to each function.

Communication is a way where people can inform, generate awareness, educate, persuade, motivate, entertain, and among others. It is a process of exchanging messages, ideas, facts, opinions, or feelings. Through language, people get to communicate and they communicate for different purposes.

And among the basic functions of communication include:  regulate/ to control, to inform, to interact socially, to express, and to motivate.

Let’s dive deep into each of these functions:

  • Regulation/Control – this is used to control and influence human behavior which ranges from simple requests to laws governing countries and large territories. This can be in the forms of doctors’ prescriptions, parents’ instructions to their children, friends giving advice, scolding, employers orders to their employees, and customers making orders.

Examples:

  1. Take this medicine 3 times a day.
  2. Wash the dishes now, or else I won’t allow you to attend the party later.
  3. Fix your toys first before eating your chocolate.
  4. Send me the documents first before I raise my concern in the forum.
  • Social Interaction – this is used to socialize and interact with other people. This is used to develop bonds, intimacy, and relations and express preferences, desires, needs, wants, decisions, goals, and strengths.

Examples:

  1. Will you marry me?
  2. You are invited to my party.
  3. I wish you a happy birthday and more birthdays to come.
  4. Would you like some coffee, tea, or me?
  5. Will you like a slice of cake or just chips?
  • Motivation – this is for motivating and encouraging people. Additionally, to

Examples:

  1. I dream of becoming a teacher.
  2. This shirt looks better on you than the other.
  3. I want to order a sundae and a regular fries.
  4. Can I have some cookies?
  5. I need to use the bathroom.
  • Information – this is for giving and getting information.

Examples:

  1. I have three brothers.
  2. Did you know that you can use this application to delete the background?
  3. Did it rain yesterday?
  4. Do you know where is Mrs. Cruz?
  5. Show me how to cook adobo.
  • Emotional expression – to facilitate people’s expression of their feelings and emotions such as love, fear, anger, joy, hope, and many others.

Examples:

  1. Yes!
  2. Oh no!
  3. Ouch!
  4. Oh my Gosh!
  5. I like you so much!
