PNP Instructor, Police Trainee Suffer Gunshot Wounds Over Accidental Firing in La Union

A police instructor and trainee suffer gunshot wounds after the accidental firing inside a police training camp in La Union.

On Wednesday, December 8, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced that an accidental fire happened within a police training school, injuring a rookie police officer. General Dionardo Carlos, Chief of the Philippine National Police, has requested a comprehensive investigation into the event.

The instructor, identified as Police Corporal Benie Dupayat, and his learner, Patrolman John Conrad Villanueva, were in the middle of a firearms familiarization exercise when the gun malfunctioned and discharged a cartridge, according to the original report of the Police Regional Training Center. The usage of a.45 caliber handgun is included in the firearms familiarization sessions.

As the bullet struck Patrolman Villanueva’s leg, Dupayat was struck in the hand. The PNP Regional Hospital is treating the two injured employees.

According to Carlos, a reassessment of the firearms training rules is required to avoid similar events during police training courses that include live fire exercises. If events like this may happen in training, even under controlled settings, Carlos believes they can happen anytime during typical police functions involving firearms and live ammunition.

Carlos, a certified teacher and guns specialist, reminded everyone that a firearm is standard police equipment that should only be handled by people who have received updated training certification on firearms competence and safety. Carlos stated that they will investigate the authenticity of the claim that this was an accident; however, he advises instructors to maintain a high level of safety at all times.

“Safety is paramount in weapons training and every instructor must not fall behind this primary consideration,” said the chief.
