MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines leaped from 103rd to 57th in an international COVID-19 recovery ranking based on infection control, vaccination, and mobility.

According to Nikkei Asia’s report on Monday, as of Nov. 30, the Philippines is ranked 57th, sharing the place with Tajikistan, Norway, and Malaysia with a total score of 53.5.

This is 46 spots higher compared to the country’s ranking in October when it placed 103rd among 120 countries.

“[This is] mainly thanks to a significant increase in its infection management scores,” said Nikkei.

“But while the country’s infection numbers have dropped from the September peak, its short-term case fatality rate stands at over 9 percent — the second highest in the world,” Nikkei added.

The index measures the following factors, with each subcategory worth 10 points for a total of 90:

  • infection management: confirmed cases of COVID-19 versus peak case count, confirmed cases per capita, tests per case
  • vaccine rollouts: total vaccine doses given per capita, mew vaccine doses given per capita, share of people who have been fully vaccinated
  • mobility: community mobility, Oxford stringency index, flight activities

Meanwhile, Bahrain topped the list with a score of 73, followed by Kuwait with 72, the United Arab Emirates with 70.5, Malta and Taiwan with 69, and China with 68.5.

In the last five spots are Belgium with a score of 40.5, Aruba and Papua New Guinea with 40, Georgia and Vietnam with 39.5, Barbados at 37, Burkina Faso at 31, and Laos at 22.5.

These results are almost the complete opposite of Bloomberg’s November COVID Resilience Ranking where it placed the Philippines last in the list of 53 countries.
