PGC in VisMin May Start Sequencing in January 2022, According to DOH

The

Department of Health

(DOH) reported that the Philippine Genome Center in the Visayas and Mindanao may start sequencing in January 2022.

On Friday (December 3, 2021), the Health Department reported that the Philippine Genome Center in Visayas and Mindanao might start sequencing COVID-19 samples next years. The agency will detect variants.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that DOH is waiting for additional

equipment

for the two laboratories while health workers were under capacity building for processes of genome sequencing.

Vergeire said that the agency will set up the facility within these two weeks. She already had a meeting with Dr. Cynthia Saloma and they are expecting the start of satellite laboratories during the first week of January next year.

“According to Dr. Cynthia Saloma, darating within these next two weeks. Iseset-up ‘yan, magkakaroon ng mga practice runs so tinitingnan namin. Noong nagmeeting kami noong isang araw, baka first week of January na po tayo makapag-umpisa sa ating satellite laboratories ng PGC sa Visayas and Mindanao,”

Vergeire said.

The Philippine government allocated a P295.7 million for the satellite offices of PGC in Visayas and Mindanao.

Previously, the

health department

claimed that other regions in the country experienced problems in submitting samples to PGC facility in Metro Manila and the PGC satellite office in Visayas and Mindanao will give easier access.
