MANILA, Philippines — Senator Bong Go announced Tuesday his withdrawal from the presidential race, saying he does not want President Rodrigo Duterte trapped in the middle ahead of the 2022 national elections.

“In the past few days, I realized that my heart and my mind are contradicting my actions.

That is why I am withdrawing from the race.”

The senator was interviewed during the wreath laying ceremony at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan for the 158th birth anniversary of Gat Andres Bonifacio, in which the President was invited as guest.

Go was running for the presidential seat with the support of no less than Duterte under the ruling PDP-Laban party.

His withdrawal from the post left the party without a standard bearer for next year’s elections, though it has yet to be seen if PDP-Laban will form a coalition with the party of Duterte’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who is running for vice president.

Earlier, Duterte-Carpio coalesced with former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, who is running for president.
