Update on COMELEC Decision on Proposed Extension of Voter Registration for Overseas Pinoys

COMELEC – Commission on Elections spokesman James Jimenez spoke on the voter registration period for the Filipinos abroad.

The period set by the

Commission on Elections

for the filing of candidacies for Election 2022 is over. The poll body set the deadline on October 8, 2021. A few days after it, on October 11, 2021, the voter registration period resumed.

Initially, the deadline of the voter registration period as set by the COMELEC in the Philippines was September 30, 2021. However, a few days before the last day of the voter registration period, there are still long queues in the sites set by the poll body for the registration.

The public called for extension of the voter registration period. It was backed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The legislative bodies passed bills that seek to extend the voter registration period.

The poll body previously told the Congress that it cannot afford to extend the voter registration for more than a week. Meanwhile, it assured the public that the calls are not falling in deaf ears and they will meet to check on all the possible extensions.

COMELEC agreed to extend the voter registration period. The extended period started last October 11, 2021 until October 30, 2021. With regards to the voter registration period abroad, a different timeline is observed including in the casting of votes next year.

, COMELEC has already decided on the proposal to extend the voter registration period for Filipinos abroad. Poll body spokesperson James Jimenez expressed that the commission en banc voted against the proposed extension.

The Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) abroad ended on October 14, 2021. Initially, the deadline set was October 1, 2021. With regards to the casting of votes, the poll body set April 10, 2021 as the start of the period set for Filipinos abroad to cast their votes for the May 9, 2022.
