Phivolcs Release Latest Update on Taal Volcano for Saturday (October 16)

Phivolcs recorded 12 volcanic quakes in Taal Volcano as alert level 2 remains.

On Saturday (October 16, 2021), the

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology

(PHIVOLCS) reported that twelve volcanic tremor events have been recorded over the past 24 hours.

Phivolcs

said that the volcanic earthquake events lasted from two to five minutes, including a low-level background tremor since July 7, 2021. Hot volcanic fluids have been spotted at the volcano’s main crater.

The volcano reportedly emits plumes reaching as high as 3,000 meters and a total 23,576 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday (October 15). The agency also observe vog over the volcano and its vicinity.

Taal continues to inflate since August 2021 as it remains under Alert Level 2. The public is still prohibited to enter Taal Volcano Island, which is considered as a permanent danger zone. Phivolcs also suggested to prohibit the occupancy and boating on Taal Lake.

The seismology bureau reminded the Filipino people that alert level 2 indicates increase level of unrest. Sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas are expected.

Phivolcs also advised the pilots to avoid flying close Taal Volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments due to sudden explosions and wind-remobilized ash. It is extremely dangerous for aircrafts.
