PAGASA Declares Official Start of La Niña and End of Southwest Monsoon Season

The state weather bureau PAGASA has finally announced the official start of

La Niña

and end of the southwest monsoon season.

On Friday (October 15, 2021), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has declared the start of the “Wet Season” or locally known as

La Niña

.

PAGASA deputy administrator Esperanza Cayanan said that frequent rains are expected in the country starting today. Flash floods and landslides are expected during the wet season.

La Niña is an oceanic and atmospheric phenomenon, which has extensive effects on the weather across the world. The sea surface temperature across the eastern equatorial part of the central Pacific Ocean will be lower than normal by 3–5 degree Celsius.

More tropical cyclones and weather disturbances are expected to enter the country and other regions across the Atlantic basin due to low wind shear and warmer sea surface temperatures.

This complex weather pattern usually occurs every few years triggered by the variations in ocean temperatures in the equatorial band of the Pacific Ocean. It usually persists for at least five months.

PAGASA is expecting La Niña to last until the first quarter of 2022.

La Niña

originates from Spanish for “the girl”, which is the counterpart of

El Niño (Dry Season)

meaning “the boy”.

The weather agency also announced that the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ season has ended and the Northeast monsoon or ‘amihan’ season will start.
