Residents Received Grocery Items in Exchange of Their Garbage in Davao City

The local government of Davao City launches a project that allows residents to receive grocery items and rice in exchange for their garbage.

In a barangay in Davao City, an initiative was launched to collect waste from residents in exchange for food. According to the report, Barangay has no effective garbage disposal in the region, which prompted the project.

To alleviate their garbage problem, the barangay launched the “May Pagkain sa Basura” project. The barangay will buy waste materials like as plastic from people in exchange for rice or groceries under the programme.

It is said that the project has been running for three months. According to the report, five kilos of waste is equal to two kilos of rice. The material is collected and sent directly to their waste processing facility, where it is melted using low-temperature pyrolysis technology.

It’s a Japanese invention that doesn’t use power or gas and doesn’t produce any smoke or stench. Instead, the waste will be ceramic ash, which may be used to nourish plants, or wood vinegar, which can be used to repel insects.

Meanwhile, in Mandaluyong City, a barangay dubbed “community palit-basura” has launched a similar effort. Hundreds of citizens arrived at the Andres Bonifacio Integrated School with huge sacks stuffed with wrappers and plastic sachets to be traded for relief.

Residents are allowed to trade up to ten kg each. Several people also brought dozens of liter bottles of soft drink loaded with plastics. Kilos of rice, vegetables, and other food from the barangay, as well as donations, were supplied.
