Here Are Where Earthquakes Are Commonly Distributed On The Map

EARTHQUAKE DISTRIBUTION

– Earthquakes although uncommon, could be predicted through knowing how they are distributed on our map.

But, how do we know where earthquakes are commonly distributed?

Even as students, we could easily see that earthquakes are distributed on the edges of the platonic plates. We can see that in our maps as colored lines showing the boundaries of the tectonic plates.

Furthermore, the map also differentiates the movements of the plates that are in contact which each other or are moving apart. Additionally, we could also see the distribution of volcano eruptions in the ocean which cause earthquakes on land.

The majority of earthquake epicenters are found on the outskirts of continents, such as the western regions of North and South America. The pacific plate is also surrounded by earthquakes.

There have also been a number of intense earthquakes along with the Himalayan mountain range in India. When comparing the locations of earthquake epicenters and active volcanoes, all regions with active volcanoes have an earthquake epicenter, but not all earthquake epicenters have active volcanoes.

TYPES OF EARTHQUAKES

Now that we know the answer to where quakes could occur based on the map, we need to understand the types of earthquakes. There are

two main types of earthquakes

:

Tectonic Earthquake

– A tectonic earthquake occurs when a plate moves, releasing a massive quantity of energy that flows in all directions away from the epicenter, causing surface shaking.

Volcanic Earthquake

– Volcanic earthquakes are caused by erupting volcanoes. It occurs when magma rises to the surface of the earth, generates tremors in the surrounding area, which is known as a volcanic earthquake.
