Nas Academy Denies Allegations It Did Not Obtain Consent Of Apo Whang-Od

APO WHANG-OD – Nas Academy belies the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples’ (NCIP) statement that Filipino tattoo artist Apo Whang-od did not give her consent to teach an online course for the academy

, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) said in a statement issued on Sunday that the legendary Mambabatok of Kalinga, Apo Whang-Od, did not give her consent to teach tattooing in an online course for

Nas Academy

. They interviewed the 104-year-old artist, her family, the elders, and the leaders of their community.

Arab Israeli vlogger Nuseir Yassin of better known as

Nas Daily

said the tattoo artist will be part of her online workshop. But according to NCIP, she was “not aware of any contract and she did not affix her thumb mark in any contract for this account.”

NCIP said that the contract was “grossly onerous” on Whang-Od’s part. They also stressed that Nuseir Yassin’s move to commercialize access to the Kalinga art of tattooing will contribute to the end of their tourism industry.

On Monday, Nas Academy Philippines responded to NCIP’s statement. They denied the allegations that they did not obtain the consent of the tattoo artist.


“It is not true that Apo Whang-Od’s consent was not obtained and that she did not affix her signature. It is also not true that the contract was not discussed with her…”



Under our agreement, they were expected to conduct due diligence and comply with all requirements mandated by Philippine law. We were assured that their group would coordinate with Whang-Od, her family, and their community,

Nas Academy Philippines added that the ‘Nas Academy’ contract was presented and translated to the legendary artist by her niece, Estela Baydon Palangdao. They also said that the contract was not onerous on the part of Whang-od.

It says that they are willing to cooperate with the regional office of the NCIP in its investigation but they are

“not given the chance to explain its side before arriving at a conclusion and releasing a statement. This is not how a fair investigation is held. Both sides must be heard to reach a fair and informed conclusion. We regret the inconvenience made to the public. We think this issue is the result of internal disputes that are outside of our control. That being said, we remain committed to our mission in the Philippines.”

Apo Whang Od was among the country’s professionals that Yassin announced will be teaching an online class in his online platform, Nas Academy. According to the website, the tattoo artist

“will reveal all her rituals, tools and methods for making traditional tattoos.”

Shortly after the news broke, it removed the artist from its website, Later, it announced that it will stop its operations in the Philippines.
