Court Convicts Ex-Cop Jonel Nuezca Who Shot Unarmed Mother, Son In Tarlac

JONEL NUEZCA – Ex-cop Jonel Nuezca was sentenced to reclusion Perpetua or life imprisonment after the Tarlac Regional Trial Court Branch 106 found him guilty of 2 counts of murder over the killing of his neighbors Sonia and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio.

To recall, Police Staff Sgt. Jonel Nuezca, who was formerly assigned at the Parañaque police crime laboratory, shot Sonya Gregorio, 52, and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio, 25, in Purok 2, Barangay Cabayaoasan, Paniqui, Tarlac on December 20, last year. The

terrible incident was caught on video

and went viral on social media.

The two parties were involved in a property right-of-way dispute, but the incident stemmed from the firing of “boga” or PVC cannon by the

Gregorio family

. The whole incident was witnessed by Jonel’s daughter.

In the viral video, Jonel Nuezca’s daughter can be heard shouting at the old woman. She said, “

Just let go. My father is a policeman

.” Sonya yelled back at the minor before the cop pulled the trigger twice on her head and on her son.

Last January, the

Nuezca pleaded “not guilty

.” He reasoned out that he did not violate any law when he shot Sonya and Frank.

The nerve-wracking incident drew widespread condemnation, with some politicians calling for reforms in the Philippine National Police (PNP) and netizens asking to stop the abuse. Sonya and Frank were buried at the Paniqui Garden of Angels Memorial Park on December 27.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN, the Philippine National Police said Jonel Nuezca was found guilty of murder and sentenced to reclusion Perpetua. Brig. Gen. Val De Leon said the former policeman was found guilty “beyond reasonable doubt” for two counts of murder over the killing of his neighbors.

Nuezca was also ordered to pay the family of the victims a total of P952,560.
