Onyok Velasco Receive Honors, Rewards From Government

ONYOK VELASCO – 1996 Olympic silver medalist Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco joined Tokyo 2020 Olympic medalists in receiving incentives from the government.

revealed that he allegedly

did not receive any rewards promised to him after winning

will receive all of the promised rewards.

Onyok Velasco said various individuals promised him a prize but not all of them were fulfilled. He said a businessman offered him a lifetime allowance of P10K each month but it stopped after a year. It is also rumored that he will receive P2.5 million from Congress.


“Yung kay Hidilyn, sana matupad lahat para hindi lang si Hidilyn, yung iba pang gustong maging athletes na kabataan, magpursige rin na ganun pala kalaki yung mga ibinibigay,

” he said.

Malacañang Palace

immediately reacted after hearing Onyok Velasco’s statement. They called it “kapabayaan” or negligence that the Olympian was unable to receive the incentives from the government. Private companies also reached out to the former boxer and gave him cash incentives and a roasted chicken store.

On Monday, August 23, 2021, Onyok Velasco joined Tokyo Olympic medalists Hidilyn Diaz, Carlo Paalam,

Nesthy Petecio

, and

Eumir Marcial

in receiving incentives from Malacañang Palace. He was awarded the Order of Lapu-Lapu, Rank of Kamagi, and P500K from the office of the president.

Other Olympians who competed in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics received a Presidential Citation and P200K. Athletes Elreen Ando and Jayson Valdez received their incentives in person.
