Details About the Visayas Power Blackout in the Morning of August 21

VISAYAS POWER BLACKOUT – A loss of electric power was reported in several areas in the Visayas from Midnight until the early morning of August 21.

One of the inevitable circumstances that affect households from time to time is the loss of electric power. Brownouts occur due various reasons including the tripping of a power line, the scheduled repair of the

electric cables

, and the automatic shut-off due to the bad weather.

Brownouts or partial outages are somehow more common compared to blackouts – the complete shutdown of the electric power in an area. Thus, the latter sparks more concern most of the time.

Recently, a Visayas power blackout that dimmed several areas in the different regions took place. Reports state that power was lost starting midnight and it lasted until early in the morning of August 21, 2021.

The

Visayas Electric Company

which supplies the electric power in several cities and municipalities in the province of Cebu said that its “whole franchise” dimmed around midnight. Amid the blackout, they assured the consumers that their System Operations Team was coordinating with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Parts of Samar, Leyte, and Bohol were also included in the areas affected by the Visayas power blackout as confirmed by the Samar Electric Cooperative (SAMELCO) and the Leyte Electric Cooperative (LEYECO).

According to SAMELCO, a total shutdown of power took place. The LEYECO reported that the loss of power in Tacloban City, Babatngon, and Palo started at 11:58 on the evening of August 20.

The cause of the blackout was yet to be identified but the power has already returned in some of the affected areas. Early in the morning of August 21, 2021, some areas in Naga, San Fernando, and Minglanilla in Cebu already got the power back.
